What to Write in a Birthday Card
A good birthday card does not need to be long. It needs to sound like you and show you know the person. Here is a simple way to write one.
A simple 3-part formula
- Greet them by name. "Happy birthday, Sam!"
- Add one specific detail. A memory, a habit, or something they did this year.
- End with a wish. For their year ahead, or just for their day.
Match the relationship
- Parents and grandparents: thank them for something specific.
- Partners: recall a shared moment.
- Friends: a gentle joke plus one sincere line.
- Coworkers: keep it short, warm, and professional.
How to sign it
For close people: "Love," "Lots of love," or "Hugs." For coworkers: "Best wishes" or "Cheers." For a group card, add your first name under your line so they know who wrote what.
Common mistakes
- Only signing your name in a store card with a printed message.
- Age jokes for people who might not enjoy them.
- Writing too small to read. Leave space.
