How to Sign a Christmas Card

Signing Christmas cards raises small questions. Whose name goes first? Do you write the kids' names? What about pets? Here are simple answers.

Couples

A common habit is to write the person whose friend or relative it is first, or simply alphabetical order. Both are fine. Example: "Love, Anna and Mark."

Families with kids

List the parents first, then the children, often oldest to youngest: "Love, Anna, Mark, Lily, and Max." Or write "The Garcia Family."

Using your last name

Plural last names do not use an apostrophe. Write "The Smiths" not "The Smith's." For names ending in s, ch, sh, x, or z, add es: "The Joneses," "The Lynches." If that feels awkward, write "The Jones Family."

Pets

Adding pets is totally fine for friends and family, usually last: "Love, Anna, Mark, and Biscuit the dog." For work cards, skip them.

Sign-off words

  • Family and close friends: Love, Warmly, With love.
  • Coworkers and clients: Warm wishes, Season's greetings, Best wishes.
  • Mixed faiths or unsure: Happy holidays, Warm wishes for the season.

Handwritten touch

If you print photo cards, sign at least your first name by hand. It takes seconds and makes the card feel personal.
